I have not heard of “fate and transport” before. Fate and transport of toxic and pharmaceutical chemicals would be devasting for the Monterey Peninsula. Living in an area with ocean and vast sea life surround you, makes every day hazards a huge concern for our environment. Human, Marine and plant life are the most venerable on the Peninsula. Proper disposal facilities are few and far between and not centrally located close to the Peninsula. If chemical are improperly transported or disposed of, the odds of it ending up in our ocean or ground water is a huge concern. Monterrey although beautiful has aging and outdating infrastructure and containment.
One way that we are combating this is new treatment facilities sponsored by the Monterey Aquarium to help promote and protect our wildlife. Also at my hospital we have a take back program with drop boxes around our pharmacy. Patients and families are encouraged to being unused and expired prescription for proper disposal. I consider living on the Monterey Peninsula as my own piece of paradise and am fortunate that our community and officials feel the same.

Great solution to a prevalent problem all across the world. I am glad to see that your organization is committed to help the community tackle this problem by being a drop off location. Without such locations, some individuals will throw the medication down the drain or on a regular trash can. These medications will end up in the bay having a very harmful impact to the marine world. I feel inspired by your post to look for ways big or small i can introduce a drop off location at our facility. Great post.
ReplyDeleteI agree Rose, these Charcoal containers are just brilliant, and honestly makes me feel safe while at work and also doing our part to keep Monterey clean and safe. Our drop-off locations are convenient and intended to be effortless for our community.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for taking time to read my post Rose, I look forward to working with you this semester!
There is a big number of veterans living in Monterey. That being said, I often visit this site to inform my clients about proper disposal of medications:http://www.montereydisposal.com/ and provide them with a copy of this: http://www.co.monterey.ca.us/home/showdocument?id=14802
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jillian, for promoting Monterey.
