To Frack or Not to Frack

BLOG #4

Is there any gas or oil activity in your community? How about refineries?
In Monterey California (my current home) we do have a oil fields and Shale formations.  San Ardo is the largest field in Monterey County. It is located in the Salinas Valley and stretches 5 miles and contain 1,500 oil wells.  The Monterey Shale formation extends from northern California to as far south as LA. According to Monterey Co website/resource the formation is currently producing oil and natural gas.
Measure Z was a fracking ban on the 2016 ballot in Monterey. It was known as the "fracking ban" and was widely televised on all local new stations. It ultimately passed and has been upheld for the most part, aside for lawsuits filed by oil companies. According to supporters of the Ban- contaminated waste water from stream injections and is reported that the water is not being well treated afterwards. IN THE NEWS: In a current news report from 02/01/19 states that many lawsuits have been handled and the plaintiffs who sued to ban fracking will maintain the county's right to defend portions of Measure Z. Effective immediately notifications were sent to the California Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources that the Fracking Ban is upheld.

How about pipelines for gas/oil?
California has multiple pipelines for natural gas, they stretch across the entire state and even include some off shore underwater locations. I wasn't able to find a map with oil pipelines, but I figure they exist.
Not that the map located below is very helpful, but it outlines all natural gas pipelines in California. The second photo shows not only the natural gas pipelines, but also the oil refineries and terminals.

  1. Nice update Jillian on the latest news. It seems in CA we have quite several pipelines. My hope is that the maintenance is up to date, regular and inspection consistently validated. Any information on this? Also, I am glad to see that the ban in your community was upheld. The oil companies always fight regulations that affect them. It is hard for them to see that the ban benefits everyone including themselves. I applaud your community for passing such a good measure. I hope more communities can grasp the power they have and protect their environment.

  2. Very informative, Jillian. I am glad that the ban on fracking continues. Truly an amazing job of the community. Was the Monterey Shale fracking banned but the oil-drilling continues?
